Wear Study of Straw Chopper Knives in Combine Harvesters

Cereal straw is a biomaterial with great potential: about 144 million tons of biomass are grown annually in Europe. For any use (fertilizer, biofuel, etc.), efficient chopping technology, i.e., the reliable and operation mobile or stationary choppers, key factor for further success. Since most chopped at harvest time, subject study wear combine’s knives. Six blades different materials designs were tested under realistic conditions during wheat rapeseed harvesting on 180 ha. The influence hardness, composition, cutting edge angle, position chopper knife was analyzed. showed that highest hardness (568 ± 11 HV) lowest angle (20.9°) had wear. induction hardened knives due to 0.42% carbon content steel. confirmed inversely proportional (the harder edge, lower wear) directly higher greater wear).
